after about a year of on-and-off hearing loss in one or the other ear, i woke up this morning almost completely deaf. so i gave up, and scheduled an appointment with the doctor. i don’t have health insurance. although, for the record, my friend eric pointed me to an option i didn’t know about before, that i might get.
so i went to the doctor. the doctor peeked in my ear, said, "oh this is no problem," and left the room. less than 12 seconds. a nurse came in a minute or two later with a syringe looking thingy that was not at all sharp, but quite large, and a bucket of warm water. they just… washed ’em out. it felt like a nice, warm shower. inside my ears. the output was less pleasant, but the experience was practically… nice. it took fifteen minutes tops, and after, i felt like i had super-hearing. everything was so loud and so crisp – i swear i could hear a fly beating his wings on the other side of town. it was the same experience as putting on glasses for the first time. it was all so clear.
and then i worked for 12 and a half hours straight.
