this morning, i got a facebook message from tree. i’ll apologize now, there’s a lot of name dropping tonight, and considering some trouble i’ve gotten into in the past, i’m not planning on using any last names. this might be difficult even for me to follow.
but so tree, which is her real name, is a friend of mine from high school, one that i don’t think i’ve seen since we graduated. so after… 5 years or so, sent me an email saying that she just found a cd i gave her once of myself. i replied this afternoon, and it turned out she was in town for the next week or so. i had previously had no plans tonight, but my friend paul had invited me to go so this friend of his open at the westcott theater for one of the guys from rusted root, and i invited tree. she wasn’t sure she could, but maybe after we could do something. i’m still getting used to the idea that kids like me should be staying out late, but i’m all about saying yes to fun things now, so i said ok.
the westcott theater is a place thats well known in these parts because it’s pretty easy to play shows there. but i hadnt ever been, so it was… interesting. an old movie theatre. pretty sketchy, really, but cool enough. i happened to see dan d. back from my days of hanging out with ian and chris, and he put a wristband on me, instead of me giving him money to get in. i tried to catch up with him, but all i got was that he doesn’t really hang out with anyone i know, he’s a "security guard" at the theater, and his life is pretty unexciting at the moment. i took his number so that hopefully we can meet up sometime.
after paul’s friend played, i really wanted to ditch out of there, so i found out that tree had collected more old high school people (nick, brian) and they were headed downtown. i was kind of excited; i’ve been wanting to go downtown since i got back home. we met up with them, hung around talking about people i had long since forgotten. we moved arenas to a different bar (people downtown are all about hopping). this next one was a little nicer, a little more crowded, and with a little prettier people. i got a chance to catch up with tree a little bit – she’s leaving to visit korea, because she signed up for a learn-korean-immersion-course. she’s been abroad in two other places, the first of which i forget, and the second of which is bejing. very cool.
and then stacey appeared out of nowhere, excitedly saying hello. i didn’t recognize her at first, not because she’s changed since i last saw her, but because it did not occur to me that i might run into someone i know. she was closely followed by her sister, whom i did not know, and irene. i did not recognize irene at first, because she looked so different. but we stood around chatting in spite of the banging club music. irene’s around till august, when she goes off to more schooling. acupuncture school. stacey’s in buffalo, studying law, which is impressive, and to be a lawyer for people who can’t afford lawyers, which is even more so. i had a good time chatting with that one, and she insisted i come visit her in buffalo. i’ve never been, but i’ve always been curious, because i have so many friends that went there. so sometime soon i’ll go visit her in buffalo.
but it was really fantastic. i made plans to see nick, tree, stacey, and dan, and i’m reminded that i know some really awesome people. i’ve got some work to do on the bar scene still but i felt infinitely more comfortable than an older me would have, and i had a really great time.
